Week 6 Notes – Tu

  • No discussion leaders today – moved to Thursday.
  • Review search assignment
    • As promised last week, no penalty if the only error with a citation was author’s name
    • Other common errors: no retrieve date, double-spaced citations, no database identified, incorrect database identified, no recognizable citation format
    • If the source (database) provides only an abstract, not full text, then this is not a valid source for this project, unless you explain how you are going to read the full text (no one did)
    • If the source (book) is not available in the UW library, then this is not a valid source for this project unless you explain how you are going to read the book (no one did)
    • Failure to include a scholarly article = 1.0 (did not meet minimum requirements of the assignment). Just because a “source” is scholarly does not mean that the article is scholarly. Peer review = scholarly. (Peer review is not merely an editorial review – if that were the case, newspapers would be scholarly.) Book reviews are almost never scholarly. Hint: no footnotes/endnotes !=scholarly.
    • Failure to include part 1 (recap of project) = one letter grade demotion
    • Plagiarism :-/
      • You cannot present another person’s words as though they are your own
      • You must use quotation marks and cite the source
      • In the case of abstracts, a wholesale copy&paste is plagiarism
    • Distribution of grades:
      • 4.0 – 6
      • 3.8 – 2
      • 3.5 – 2
      • 3.0 – 4
      • 2.5 – 1
      • 2.0 – 3
      • 1.0 – 10
      • 0 – 2
  • Rework search assignment
    • Music: No one lost points for linking to an MP3. However, links should not go to an MP3 but to the specific page where the MP3 can be found. Copyright information should be specific: Creative Commons License – Attribution Required is correct. Just “Creative Commons License” is not.
    • Sources: Rework your citations to conform with APA (other than the hanging indent). In addition:
      • Find a scholarly source if you did not have one. Cite, annotate and link it to your research correctly. This is not a “hoop” — you must show clearly how the resource relates to your research for the quarter.
      • If your resource was “abstract” only or a book unavailable in the UW library system — find a new resource that relates to your research. Cite, annotate and link it to your research correctly. This is not a “hoop” — you must show clearly how the resource relates to your research for the quarter.
  • Post corrected information to your WordPress blog:
    1. Post corrected music information ; tag the post “assignment.” Title it “Music Sources – 2
    2. Post corrected source information; tag the post “assignment.” Title it “Podcast Sources – 2
  • From last week: Recording With Audacity (9:07)
  • Editing with Audacity, pt 1 (3:03)
    • Using COM microphones – reminder!
