For the first 20 minutes of class — read two or three of your fellow classmate essays. Make a cogent comment on each. In a new blog post (category: assignment), link to the essays where you have made your comments.
See John’s COM300 page for an inspired method (wish I’d thought of it!) for keeping track of the four “at large” comments that are part of class participation. This asynchronous and written form of class participation provides an opportunity to practice the technology and for students who are less comfortable speaking up in class to have another way to participate.
You should have made at least one unassigned comment by now!
